Mount Olympus is the highest mountain in Greece at 2,919 metres high (9,577 feet).Since its base is located at sea level, it is one of the highest mountains in Europe,in real absolute altitude from base to top. It is located in Macedonia, about 100 km away from Thessaloniki, Greece's second largest city.Mount Olympus is the home of the Olympians, the principal gods in the Greek pantheon. The United States Congress designated the Mount Olympus Wilderness (map) in 1984 and it now has a total of 15,300 acres.Mount Olympus is a 45km drive from Windwhistle. The mountain road is shingle and chains should be carried at all times. Occasionally mountain access becomes 4wd only from the bottom hut, where onward transport can be arranged. The entire area was declared Greece's first national park in 1937 and consists of eight peaks including the "Throne of Zeus" at 2909 metres and Mytikas which has the highest summit at 2919 metres.
Climbing Olympus has become such a major attraction that if you pitch up without a reservation in July or August you may have difficulty finding a bed for the night.
Once you take to the mountain trails you'll quickly realise why the ancients believed this was the sacred home of Zeus, the king of the gods, his wife Hera, brothers Poseidon and Hades, sisters Demeter and Hestia and children. This magnificent mountain range is home to around 1700 plant species, many of which are unique to Olympus. The mountainsides are cloaked in dense forests of pine, beech, oak and cedar trees which harbour various wildlife including wolves, bears and lynx. The slopes are buried beneath two metres of snow in winter and only accessible to the most experienced climbers - even in July the snow lurks in shadowed corners and crevices.

The Amazon rainforest is the largest tropical rainforest in the world

Posted by SRAINA in , , , , , ,

The Amazon rainforest is the largest and most species-rich tract of tropical rainforest in the world.
The Amazon rainforest also known as Amazonia, or the Amazon jungle, is a moist broadleaf forest that covers most of the Amazon Basin of South America. This basin encompasses seven million square kilometers (1.7 billion acres), of which five and a half million square kilometers (1.4 billion acres) are covered by the rainforest. The majority of the forest is contained within Brazil, with 60% of the rainforest, followed by Peru with 13%, and with minor amounts in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana. States or departments in four nations bear the name Amazonas after it.
Most travelers visit the western areas of the rain forest that remain largely untouched, such as the Loreto region of Peru, so they may not notice that the ecosystem is under siege. At current rates, 55 percent of its rain forests could be gone by 2030—a looming disaster not only for the region’s plants and animals, but for the world. "I've seen areas along the river where it's been beautiful, pristine forest one year, and the next it's been clearcut," says Harris. "That's pretty hard to take.". The Amazon River is the largest river in the world by volume, with a total flow greater than the top ten rivers worldwide combined. It accounts for approximately one-fifth of the total world river flow and has the biggest drainage basin on the planet. Not a single bridge crosses the Amazon.
The immensity of the Amazon's challenge, like the scale of its landscape, requires a long-term conservation vision backed by strong scientific expertise. WWF has been at the forefront in protecting the Amazon for more than 40 years. Our approach is succeeding because we engage local communities and partner with governments to identify mutual solutions that can bridge the needs of economic development and conservation.
In the last decades, scientific research has established a clear link between the health of the Amazon and the integrity of the global environment, but still only a fraction of its biological richness has been revealed. Today, rapid deforestation threatens the Amazon.
The Amazon is ranking first in Group E, the category for forests, national parks and nature reserves.
The Amazon rainforest was short-listed in 2008 as a candidate to one of the New7Wonders of Nature by the New Seven Wonders of the World Foundation.

Under Japanese rule, it was designated part of the Niitaka Arisan National Park in 1937. Several other mountains are also located in the park, including Siouguluan Mountain, Mabolasih Mountain, Dafenjian Mountain, Sinkang Mountain, and Guan Mountain. The mountain is a favorite of Taiwanese mountain climbers.

In 1864 President Lincoln signed an announcement regarding the establishment of Yosemite as the first State Park in the world.

The park is also known for its diverse wildlife and ecology. The environment around Yu Shan itself spans from sub-tropical forests at its base to alpine conditions at its peak. The summer seasons last longer and winter seasons go shorter.
The park encompasses a variety of habitats ranging from broadleaf forest at lower altitudes to mixed forest, coniferous forest, bamboo, and finally, at the highest elevations, waist-high arrow bamboo, clumps of conifers, and bare rocky outcrops. Flowers include azaleas, which abound in spring, and a wide variety of colorful alpine blossoms. The park is home to a large variety of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and butterflies.Larger animals such as the sambar deer, black bear,Taiwan macaque, and serows can sometimes be seen, and their call is often heard.
The National Parks in Taiwan were established according to the first and sixth clauses of the National Park Laws. Their aim is to protect and preserve unique natural sceneries, wildlife, and historical sites in the national parks and to provide people with a place for education, recreation, and research. Thus national parks should maintain three goals: preservation; education and recreation; and research.
Nature Reserves should offer long-term preserved natural landscapes, native fauna and flora, and unique ecosystems. The beautiful sounds of nature are not only pleasing, but also remind us of the preciousness of life.

Posted by SRAINA in , , , , , ,

The Kalahari Desert is a large desert area in southwestern Sub-Saharan Africa extending 900,000 km² (225,000 sq. mi.), covering much of Botswana and parts of Namibia.
The Kalahari Desert was once a much wetter place. The ancient Lake Makgadikgadi dominated the area, covering the Makgadikgadi Pan and other areas, until its final drainage some 10,000 years ago. It have once covered as much as 275,000 km² and was approximately 30 m deep. Parts of the Kalahari receive over 250 mm (9.8") of erratic rainfall annually and are quite well vegetated; it is only truly arid in the southwest with under 175 mm (6.9") of rain annually, making the Kalahari a fossil desert. Summer temperatures in the Kalahari range from 20 to 45°C (68–113°F).It is part of the huge sand basin that reaches from the Orange River up to Angola, in the west to Namibia and in the east to Zimbabwe.
The Kalahari is one of Africa's last wildlife paradises. These inconspicuous little birds, which resemble sparrows, live in huge communal nests with a diametre of up to two metres. At any given time, hundreds of lively little birds are breeding and feeding their youngsters in such a nesting colony.Animals that live in the region include brown hyenas, lions, meerkats, several species of antelope, and many types of birds and reptiles.

However, the moment the rains are gone the Kalahari becomes dry and moody. It can rain very heavily in one day, rain that produces floods that sweep everything while the next day can be as dry as ever.

Niagara Falls one of the world's favorite destinations!

The Niagara Falls are voluminous waterfalls on the Niagara River. The Niagara Falls are straddling the international border between the Canadian province of Ontario and the U.S. state of New York. The falls are 17 miles (27 km) north-northwest of Buffalo, New York and 75 miles (120 km) south-southeast of Toronto, Ontario, between the twin cities of Niagara Falls, Ontario, and Niagara Falls, New York.Niagara Falls is divided into the Horseshoe Falls and the American Falls. The Horseshoe Falls drop about 173 feet (53 m), the height of the American Falls varies between 70-100 feet (21 m) because of the presence of giant boulders at its base. The larger Horseshoe Falls are about 2,600 feet (792 m) wide, while the American Falls are 1,060 feet (323 m) wide. The volume of water approaching the falls during peak flow season may sometimes be as much as 202,000 cubic feet per second (5,720 m³/s).[3] Since the flow is a direct function of the Lake Erie water elevation, it typically peaks in late spring or early summer.

The first arrived in Niagara Region almost 12,000 years ago, just in time to witness the birth of the Falls. The land was different then, consisting of tundra and spruce forest. ,Niagara was inhabited by the Clovis people. These nomadic hunters likely camped along the old Lake Erie shoreline, living in simple, tiny dwellings. They left little to mark their tenure except chipped stones.the 17 th Century, the Iroquoian villages were under the direction of various chiefs elected from the major clans. In turn, these villages were allied within powerful tribal confederacies.Constructed to allow traffic to by-pass the rapids and falls of the Niagara River, the Portage opened in 1790. Its northern terminus was Queenston. The southern end was at the mouth of Chippawa Creek where a small settlement
christened Chippawa soon developed. Its growth was checked by the War of 1812 but by the mid-nineteenth century Chippawa had grown considerably. It was incorporated as a village in 1850.In 1848, the first bridge opened across the Niagara River. Designed as a suspension bridge for carriages and pedestrians, it was located where the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge is today. In 1855, John August Roebling, the designer of the Brooklyn Bridge, built the Niagara Railway Suspension Bridge, the first bridge of its type in the world. Between the late 1700s and the middle 1800s, boats were the main way to get to Niagara Falls. By 1896, three boats plied the route between Toronto and Queenston. After World War 1, automobile touring became popular. As a response, attractions and accommodations sprang up in strip developments, much of which still survives.
Come see what makes Niagara Falls one of the world's favorite destinations!
